Hoped you enjoyed your stay. Please accept this token of our appreciation for staying with us. If you are ever in town again. Our door is always open.

“Thank you,” he said to himself. “Don’t mind if I do.” He pulled out the cork and took a long drink from the bottle. He choked as it went down. “I’ll have the last laugh, Lily.” He took another drink and then another. The bottle was almost empty when he finally set it down.

Santiago was starting to sweat. He shrugged out of his jacket wondering what the thermostat was on. The thought of getting up and looking at it was out of the question. Besides, he had to finish this bottle of tequila. The light from the lamp was hurting his eyes and he leaned over to turn it off and almost fell off the chair.

“Careful, nieto.”

Santiago froze and looked up and saw his grandfather. “Abuelo?”

He closed his eyes and opened them. His grandfather, his abuelo, was still standing in front of the table, yet he was dead and had been for twelve years. Why was he seeing him now?

“How are you here, abuelo?”

“Can’t I visit my favorite nieto?”

“Yes,” Santiago slurred, and clutched at his chest. His heart was beating uncontrollably and he was drenched with sweat. He grabbed the edge of the table to steady himself. “Abuelo, I missed you.”

He was hearing voices, many of them. Relatives who had passed on. They couldn’t be here. They were dead. He looked wildly around the room, trying to focus on the shadows, but he saw nothing. There was no one there. Even his grandfather was gone. The voices got louder as the room began to spin faster and faster. He stretched out his arms and held on to the table, as he laid his head on the cool surface and closed his eyes.
